Security operatives have arrested 21 suspected drug peddlers during a major raid carried out in Abia State as part of ongoing efforts to tackle criminal activities and drug trafficking within the region.
The operation, which was conducted by troops of the Nigerian Army in collaboration with other security agencies, took place at Owaza Mammy Market in Ukwa West Local Government Area of the state. The raid followed credible intelligence reports linking the area to illegal drug sales and other criminal activities.
According to military authorities, the operation targeted suspected hideouts where illicit substances were allegedly being distributed. During the raid, security personnel recovered quantities of Indian hemp, hard drugs, smoking materials, and cash believed to be proceeds from illegal drug sales.
Officials disclosed that the suspects were arrested without major resistance as troops successfully secured the area before carrying out thorough searches around the market and nearby locations.
The Nigerian Army said the operation forms part of intensified security measures aimed at dismantling criminal networks, reducing drug abuse, and restoring peace within affected communities.
Authorities further revealed that the arrested suspects will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for proper investigation and prosecution.
Residents of the community have commended the security agencies for the operation, expressing hope that the crackdown will help reduce crime and improve safety in the area.
Meanwhile, security forces have assured members of the public that patrols and intelligence-driven operations will continue across Abia State and neighboring communities to prevent criminal elements from regrouping.
