Nigeria and the United States have carried out fresh coordinated airstrikes targeting ISIS-linked militants operating in northeastern Nigeria, marking another major step in ongoing counterterrorism efforts within the region.
According to reports released on Monday, the joint military operation involved the Nigerian Armed Forces working alongside the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) to attack terrorist hideouts believed to be linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The airstrikes reportedly targeted several insurgent camps located in remote areas of Borno State, a region that has remained heavily affected by insurgency for more than a decade. Security sources revealed that multiple militants were neutralized during the operation, while efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage.
Military officials described the operation as part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening terrorist networks, disrupting supply routes, and reducing attacks on civilian communities and security personnel in the Northeast.
The renewed cooperation between Nigeria and the United States highlights growing international support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. The US Africa Command stated that intelligence sharing, surveillance, and coordinated air operations remain important in combating extremist groups across West Africa.
Residents in some affected communities reportedly heard loud explosions during the overnight operation, while security forces have intensified patrols in nearby areas to prevent possible retaliatory attacks.
Security experts believe the operation could significantly affect ISIS-linked activities in the region if sustained military pressure continues in the coming months. However, analysts also stress that long-term peace will require improved community security, economic development, and humanitarian support for displaced residents affected by years of conflict.
The Nigerian government has continued to assure citizens that efforts to restore stability in the Northeast remain a top national priority as military operations against insurgent groups intensify.
